US 'National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency' Unveiled

More than 80 energy, environmental and other organizations have announced commitments and public statements in support of the National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency (NAPEE), released yesterday, which provides energy consumers and providers information on policies and techniques to save money as well as protect the environment. By adopting the plan’s recommendations on low-cost, under-used energy efficiency, Americans could save hundreds of billions of dollars on their gas and electric utility bills, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and lower the costs for energy and pollution controls. “President Bush is helping change the way America powers its homes and businesses by lifting the barriers blocking investments in energy efficiency,” said EPA Deputy Administrator Marcus Peacock. “Smart power technology avoids greenhouse gas emissions, protects our nation’s energy security, and saves money – a hat trick for our environment and our wallets.” “Taking action to support the National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency is a great step towards maximizing energy efficiency, while also answering the president’s call to be mindful of energy consumption,” Kevin Kolevar, DOE director of the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability said. Sub Pop Records First to Green Its Label

Sub Pop Records, the music label that has given rise to bands ranging from Nirvana to The Shins, has purchased enough Green-e certified Green Tags, also known as renewable energy credits, from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to equal 100 percent of the company’s energy use. To date, Sub Pop records is the first Green-e certified record label company in the United States. “I was made aware of the program by one of my co-workers. I was, quite frankly, shocked by how easy it is to support renewable energy. Green Tags are a simple way for anyone to choose wind energy, which, in turn, lowers dependence on burning fossils fuels for energy,” said Jonathan Poneman, president of Sub Pop Records. “Green Tags fulfill an important commitment to both the planet and the Pacific Northwest, where Sub Pop is rooted.” Earlier this year, Sub Pop Records’ recording artist Kelley Stoltz released Below the Branches as the first album to be green powered and incorporate the Green-e label on its packaging. Altra Inc. Secures $120M in Equity Funding

Altra Inc., a California-based developer of renewable fuel projects, has completed a second round of equity funding that has raised more than $120 million. In addition to Altra’s lead investors, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Omninet Private Equity, LLC, Sage Capital Partners, L.P., Angeleno Group, LLC and Khosla Ventures, included in this round are several prominent private equity firms and financial investors including, Duff Ackerman and Advanced Equities. Altra completed its initial equity funding in April 2006 and has now raised or is completing the placement of over $250 million in equity and debt financing. Second round equity funding will be utilized to complete Altra’s current phase of projects as it seeks to build 500 million gallons per year (MMGY) of biofuel production capacity across the nation through the acquisition of existing operating assets as well as the development of strategically located and permitted sites with state-of-the-art biofuel refining technology. In addition to making the announcement of its latest round of funding, Altra indicated that it is on schedule with several additional projects including breaking ground on a 110 MMGY ethanol production facility in Nebraska in September of this year.
