Verde Energy, a company that provides competitive quotes on renewable energy projects for customers, announced it would provide solar financing options to residential and commercial customers nationwide through a partnership with Wells Fargo. Sao Martinho (SMTO3.SA), a Brazilian sugar and ethanol producer, saw its shares rise by 18.3% in its first day of trading on the Sao Paulo stock exchange. The IPO follows a string of ethanol company debuts, contributing to a record year on the stock exchange. Brazil, Latin America’s largest country, requires all gasoline to be blended with cane-based ethanol; over two-thirds of new cars are equipped with flex-fuel engines.

Poll: American High School Students Don't Understand Climate Change

Despite an increasing emphasis at school and in the media on the causes and effects of global climate change, most American high school students don’t adequately understand the issue, according to a national telephone survey of 900 students. Even in a year when Gore’s global-warming documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” is nominated for an Oscar, the average high school student believes climate change has no consequences for them in their lifetime, according to the survey. The average high school student fails a quiz on the causes and consequences of climate change. The survey also found that home life influences students’ “pro-environment” behavior much more strongly than school. And whether they rely on science class or the media for information, students have the same level of knowledge about the issue. There was no difference in what students know about climate change regardless of where they get their information. Schools don’t seem to be teaching many specifics about climate change. In addition to a limited understanding of the science behind climate change, most students don’t see themselves at risk: Only 28 percent believe it’s very likely that climate change will affect them personally in their lifetimes. Cree & Raleigh, NC Launch First 'LED City'

Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a U.S.-based leader in Light Emitting Diode (LED) solid-state lighting components, and the City of Raleigh, North Carolina announced a joint, city-wide initiative to test, deploy and promote LED technology focused on a variety of general lighting applications. The “LED City” initiative is designed to create a “living laboratory” to deliver the economic, environmental and usage benefits of LED lighting to the residents of Raleigh. The first project is focused on validating both the cost savings and technology capabilities of LEDs through an installation of LED lighting in the City’s Municipal Building parking deck. Both Cree and Raleigh public officials expect the initiative to serve as a model for other cities that are considering implementing energy-efficient infrastructures. Raleigh plans to deploy LED lighting in applications such as garage and parking lot lights, street lights, architectural and accent lighting, portable lighting and pedestrian and walkway lighting over the next 18 months.
