Governor's Ask Car Mgrs to Stop Litigating, Start Addressing Climate Change

Thirteen governors from across the United States today sent a letter to six automotive corporations asking the industry to support the governors’ commitment to address climate change. The corporations are General Motors, Chrysler, American Honda, Ford, Toyota, and Nissan. “The public is demanding that states, in the absence of federal action, take real and meaningful steps to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases,” the governors wrote in the letter. “Ensuring that our automobiles have a lower carbon footprint is an essential piece of our greenhouse gas reduction strategy.” The letter went further to explain that the United States passenger vehicle/light duty truck sector is second only to the electricity sector in the amount of greenhouse gases emitted. California was the first state to adopt clean tailpipe standards, followed by 11 other states, leading to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 74 million metric tons by 2020. The 13 governors asked the automotive leaders to withdraw the legal challenges to clean vehicle standards and work with the states to reverse the threat of global warming. “We do not believe it is productive for your industry to continue to fight state implementation of clean tailpipe standards,” the governors said. “We would prefer to […]

Alliance Formed to Accelerate US Solar Policies

The leading U.S. solar electricity module manufacturers and systems integrators have joined forces to form The Solar Alliance and appointed the Hon. Claudine Schneider, former five-term U.S. Congresswoman from Rhode Island, as the group’s first president. The Solar Alliance will focus its efforts on supporting state lawmakers, regulators and utilities in their efforts to establish more effective solar policies and programs throughout the United States. Inaugural members of The Solar Alliance include: American Solar Electric, BP Solar, Conergy (CEYHF.PK), DT Solar, Energy Innovations, Evergreen Solar (NASDAQ ESLR), First Solar (FSLR), Kyocera Solar (NYSE KYO), Mitsubishi Electric, MMA Renewable Ventures, PPM Energy, Inc. REC Solar, Sanyo Energy (TYO-SANYY), Schott Solar, Sharp Solar, SolarWorld, SPG Solar, Sun Edison, SunPower (SPWR), Suntech (NYSE STP), United Solar and Xantrex (XTX.TL). “Solar energy has captured the imagination of a diverse group of businesses and homeowners around the country as a way to gain control over electricity prices and contribute positively to the environment at the same time,” said Claudine Schneider, President of The Solar Alliance. “We want to offer our experience and assistance to the governors, state legislators and regulators as they devise policies and programs to respond to the growing demand for solar by […]

Bill Introduced to Phase Out Incandescents in U.S.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) has introduced legislation to phase out older-style light bulbs and replace them with newer ones that burn just as brightly but use much less energy. When fully implemented, the switch to more efficient light bulbs will save Americans up to $6 billion a year in electricity costs. “The Energy Efficient Lighting for a Brighter Tomorrow Act (S. 2017) provides a reasonable process for light bulb manufacturers to plan for and implement major changes,” Sen. Bingaman said. “For 125 years, the has used the same old lighting technologies. When fully implemented, the new standard will save nearly as much energy as all of the Federal appliance standards from 1987-2000.” Added Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), an original co-sponsor: “Americans have improved upon nearly all of Thomas Edison’s inventions, and this legislation will encourage a new generation of innovators to advance his greatest accomplishment, the light bulb. I look forward to working with Sen. Bingaman on getting this bill signed into law — energy efficient lighting will save consumers billions in energy costs and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The next step is looking at how to ensure these innovative new technologies are manufactured by Americans.” Under Bingaman’s bill, […]

Oil Giant Agrees to Fight Greenhouse Gases

Taking a new tack on his statewide campaign against global warming, California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown announced a settlement Tuesday that requires ConocoPhillips to spend $10 million to offset greenhouse gases created by a proposed $600 million expansion of its East Bay refinery. Brown told a news conference that the accord is believed to be the first time an oil refinery in the country has agreed to mitigate increased carbon emissions from an expansion project. To compensate for an initial emissions increase of 500,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually at its Rodeo facility, the oil giant agreed to fund a $7 million offset program under the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, a $200,000 restoration of the San Pablo wetlands and a $2.8 million reforestation effort that is projected to sequester 1.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. In addition, ConocoPhillips agreed to identify all greenhouse gas emissions sources and reduction opportunities at its California refineries, identify energy savings measures for its Rodeo refinery and surrender a permit for a petroleum coke purification plant at its Santa Maria facility, which emitted 70,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases annually until it was shut down earlier this year. Brown said that […]

EPURON Takes Over Spanish Company

EPURON GmbH has acquired Panergia, a Spanish clean energy project management and development company. With this acquisition, EPURON’s project pipeline for large-scale solar power plants in Spain has expanded to a total output of some 150 megawatts. Panergia was founded in Madrid in 2003 and has shown a track record of fast-growing business generation over the years. The company’s project managers and engineers are among the first to develop Europe’s youngest and most dynamic-growing solar energy market. “The take-over of Panergia will accelerate our current dynamic growth in Spain. Together, we will establish a long term leading position among the top project developers and financiers,” explained Thomas-Tim Savecke, managing director at EPURON responsible for photovoltaic and solar thermal development. By the end of this year, EPURON will complete and connect solar energy projects in Spain that amount to an expected total capacity of more than 20 megawatts to the public power grid.Other large-scale projects are under completion and some will begin construction later this year. This makes EPURON one of the leading companies in the European market to implement large-scale photovoltaic plants. Among these projects are solar parks developed jointly with Panergia. As early as 2005, both companies have been […]
