Description

Opportunities to work as interns and in other capacities in many
international locations for the HORIZON Solutions Site.

Web sites: http://www.solutions-site.org and http://www.yale.edu/horizon

The Site provides readily accessible peer-reviewed answers to problems in
environment, health, population, and development.

Harvard and Yale universities, the International Development Research Centre
of Canada, the United Nations Development Programme, Environment Programme,
Population Fund, and UNICEF are collaborating with HORIZON Communications on
the Site. Individuals and institutions throughout the world are
participating. Horizon is based at Yale and Harvard and in Sweden. Additional
international bases are being established in east and west Africa, Singapore,
Latin America and Europe.

United Nations Development Programme Administrator, James Gustave Speth
hosted a special event with an accompanying exhibit for the formal launching
of the Solutions Site on April 14th at the United Nations. Mr. Speth praised
HORIZON's twenty years of work with case studies on solutions and emphasized
the importance of using the HORIZON Solutions Site especially for developing
countries and to empower poor communities to identify and achieve development
goals.

The UNDP created a new site on which its Info21 and Sustainable Development
Networking Programme (SDNP) sites are hyperlinked with the Solutions Site,
www.knowledgebroker.org, in time for the exhibit. It is a permanent site
now.

The case studies include information on the background of the problem being
addressed; how and by whom the solution was initiated; how long it has been
underway; how well it is working; constraining factors such as costs,
limitations of materials; applicability and feasibility for replication
locally, regionally, internationally; evaluation results, if any, and by whom
the evaluation was conducted; photographs, graphic and other visual
materials; and, resources and contacts for further information.

As HORIZON states in its brochure: "It is not enough to chronicle the
problems and provide random reports on successful efforts. There is a
crucial need for carefully researched, documented and disseminated
information about solutions. People need to know what can be and is being
done to protect and improve life on earth and to have the knowledge to be
able to replicate, all or in part, solutions to meet their own needs."

The Site is dedicated to better conditions throughout the world by finding
what can be and is being done to help protect and improve life on earth, and
to make that information available for others to benefit.

Qualifications:
Strong scientific background and an informed interest in one or more of the
following fields: environment, population, sustainable development, public
health, cultural anthropology, or human ecology. Strong communication and
research skills. Ability to work collaboratively and independently. Ability to communicate by e-mail and the Web.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities are tailored to a person's particular talents and might entail: synthesizing existing research, doing further research, fact checking, abstracting, developing existing research into case studies, helping others prepare case studies, disseminating information about the Site and about particular solutions to meet specific needs, and helping initiate projects based on solutions in the Solutions Site. Interns based in international locations must have language fluency and understanding of of the local culture.

Possible stipends for interns working in international locations.
