Sharp Signs 58MW Supply Contract for California Solar

Sharp Electronics Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan’s Sharp Corporation (6753.T), announced a supply agreement for a 58-megawatts (MW) solar power plant in Central California.

The Avenal photovoltaic solar power facility consists of three adjacent project in Kings County that will be jointly owned by Eurus and NRG Solar (NYSE: NRG). All three projects will utilize thin film solar modules from Sharp.

Ryan Company, Inc, a subsidiary of Quanta Services (NYSE: PWR), will perform engineering, procurement and construction for the project.

The power produced by Avenal will be purchased by PG&E (NYSE: PCG) under 20-year power purchase agreements approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Construction on the first two projects, Sun City (25 MW DC) and Sand Drag (24 MW DC) will begin immediately and a third, Avenal Park (8 MW DC), is expected to begin construction soon thereafter. All three are scheduled to be commissioned in mid 2011.

The projects are expected to create up to 200 total solar jobs during construction and up to 5 permanent jobs.

This project is one of the largest Sharp has supplied to date. The thin-film solar panels utilized for the project will be manufactured
in the Sharp plant in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan.

Just last week, Sharp announced that it will acquire San Francisco-based solar developer Recurrent Energy for $305 million.
