Sanyo to Expand Solar and Energy Business in Europe

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (6764.TO) announced that it will begin full-scale development and expansion of its solar and energy business in the European market in 2010.

The compay aims to achieve a business scale of EUR 800 million in Europe by March 2016, providing photovoltaic modules, lithium-ion battery systems, energy management systems that include controllers, as well as a comprehensive maintenance service.

So far, Sanyo has expanded its HITR solar cell business mainly through residential applications in the European market.

Starting this fiscal year, Sanyo will focus on facilities such as factories, schools and stores, offering its Smart Energy System (SES), which combines technologies for energy generation (photovoltaic systems), energy storage (rechargeable batteries), and energy efficiency (commercial equipment, etc.).

Sanyo says the package also can be installed in small-scale applications such as homes. Medium-scale applications can be deployed for convenience stores, and large-scale applications would be for factories.

In Europe, Sanyo currently has a production capacity of 165 megawatts (MW) in Hungary and will nearly double the capacity to 315 MW by the end of March 2011.

Last November, Sanyo detailed its worldwide plans for ramping up manufacturing of photovoltaics.
