SunPower Reportedly Picks California For First US Plant

More information on clean energy jobs.

Solar company SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWRA) has chosen California as the location for its first US manufacturing facility, according to a Reuters report.

An unnamed source said the facility will be located near the company’s headquarters in San Jose.

The company has scheduled a press conference for Thursday to make a "significant announcement."

In September 2009, the company said it was considering California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.

In March 2010, the company announced a major supply agreement for 200 MW of solar panels to be used in Southern California Edison’s rooftop solar program. That agreement, along with California’s recent move to incentivize manufaturing and clean energy jobs, likely affected the company’s decision.

SunPower currently assembles solar panels in the Philippines and China, and has a contract with Jabil Circuit (NYSE: JBL) for production in Mexico.
