US Air Carriers Sue UK Over Emissions Trading

The Air Transport Association, joined by American Airlines (NYSE: AMR), Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE: CAL) and United Airlines (NYSE: UAUA) are suing the government of the United Kingdom over the implementation of the European Union’s emissions trading scheme (ETS), according to a report in Business Week.

The EU last year decided to require air carriers to participate in emissions trading beginning in 2012, in an effort to reach deeper cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. 

However, the US companies say that violates the U.S.-EU bilateral Air Transport Agreement of April 2007 and the Kyoto Protocol.
