Green Roofs… How About Green Walls

Green roofs are beginning to catch on, as designers recognize the benefits they offer in cooling buildings and cities, creating wildlife habitat and controlling stormwater run-off. Now the idea is going over the edge and onto the walls.

A section of green wall the size of two tennis courts was recently installed in Pittsburgh on the PNC Financial Services Group building. The wall, which contains more than 15,000 ferns, sedums, brass buttons and other plants, is expected to cool the wall about 25%, while also providing a stunning visual effect.

Green Living Technologies LLC, of Rochester, N.Y. designed the wall and has done other installations in cities across the U.S.
