Ericsson, S. Korea Look to Next-Gen Wireless for Sustainability Solutions

Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and the Republic of Korea have initiated a
collaboration aiming to use mobile broadband and other communication
technologies, such as machine to machine (m2m), to create what they are calling a "green
eco-system."

As part of this system Ericsson, together with Korean
companies, will establish a community for the development of
sustainable climate solutions based on 4G technologies.

4G–or 4th Generation–is considered the next wave in the field of wireless communications that is expected to provide Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies for voice, data and streamed multimedia at higher data rates, anywhere that cellular service is available.

Erricson will set up a facility in South Korea for research, development and testing of 4G technology. Erricson did not release any financial details, but a statement from South Korea’s presidential office said the Stockholm-based company plans to spend about $1.5 billion in the country over the next five years and increase the number of employees from 80 to 1,000.

Korea’s president, Lee Myung-bak and Ericsson’s newly appointed CEO,
Hans Vestberg met in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss how the smart use
of telecommunications and IT can help Korea and the rest of the world
to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Ericsson has said it believes cutting CO2 emissions will require
large-scale investments in Information and Communication Technology
(ICT), and that the sector could offset societal CO2 emissions
by more than 15% by 2020.

Korea is already one of the world’s most advanced ICT nations.

Lee Myung-Bak, President of South Korea, said: "We are certain that by developments in the ICT area we
will take needed steps to a more sustainable future."
