San Diego OK's Huge Desalination Project

Construction could begin later this year on what is planned to be the largest desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere.

San Diego’s water board gave approval Wednesday to a $320 million proposal by Poseidon Resources that would produce 50 million gallons of drinking water a day from seawater collected at the site in Carlsbad, California.

Environmental groups have fought the Poseidon plant, arguing its intake valve would kill marine life. Two lawsuits aiming to block construction are scheduled for hearings next month.

As planned the desalination plant would be capable of providing 10% of San Diego’s water needs through a process of reverse osmosis.
