Sanyo to Build New Solar Cell Factory in Japan

Sanyo Electric Co. (6764.T) announced yesterday that it will build a new solar cell plant in Japan, according to an AFP report.

The company, which is being bought by rival Panasonic Corp. (6752.T), hopes to double its photovoltaic (PV) production capacity to 680,000 kilowatts annually.

The capacity expansion includes the new factory in Osaka prefecture, as well as a thin-film plant being developed in a joint venture with Nippoin Oil Corp. (5001.T) Both plants are expected to begin production in 2010.

According to a company representative, the solar cells built in Osaka will offer improved power generation compared to cells from the company’s existing factory in central Japan.
