Energy Issues Influence Presidential Election – Survey

A national survey of voters showed that energy issues played a tremendous role in last week’s presidential election.

A nationwide poll of 1200 voters conducted for Sierra Club by Lake Research Partners on Monday, November 3 and Tuesday November 4 showed that 50% of voters said energy issues were personally important in deciding for whom to vote.

Sixty-two percent of voters remembered hearing at least some or a lot about energy issues and global warming from the Presidential candidates. And based on what they heard, voters thought Obama has a better plan for investing in clean energy to create clean energy jobs by 49% to 35%, according to the survey.

Voters also understood that there was a difference between Obama and McCain on energy issues with 82% saying there was at least some difference including 43% saying there was a very clear difference.

"With energy playing such an important role for so many voters, it is clear that President-elect Obama has the mandate he needs to move forward with his plans for the clean energy future that will rebuild our economy," said Cathy Duvall, Sierra Club Political Director. "Obama pledged to promote clean energy to create jobs, secure energy independence, and fight global warming and Americans clearly want him to keep that promise."
