Car Pooling on the Web

HOV Lane

The biggest barrier to car pooling is finding the right person to ride with. Visit www.carpoolworld.com and you might find a solution this problem. Enter your longitude and latitude coordinates (U.S. only) for your home and work locations – the site shows you how – and exchange emails with your closest matches. You might get a reply like, “Lives a couple of houses away and works down the street from you.”

Government and corporate employers can purchase the software that runs the program to match their own employees. Yakima County in Washington State is beta-testing the software for their use right now. It will be offered as shareware through the web site soon.

The national ‘Commuter Choice’ program in the U.S. allows employers to reimburse employees for commuting expenses up to $65/month ($100/month starting in 2002) as a tax-deductible expense for the employer and a tax-exempt benefit for the employee. To qualify as a van pool, a vehicle must be used 80 percent for commuting to work, must seat 7 people (including the driver), and must be used with at least 4 occupants (including the driver) on average. The driver is eligible for $175/month parking fees in addition to the $65/month commuting expense.
