Verizon, eMeter Announce Cloud-Based Service For Metering Data

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) announced two new partnerships in the smart grid sector.

The communications giant is teaming with software company eMeter to develop one of the first cloud-based meter data management offerings for the utility industry.

The new service, expected to be available in the spring, will deliver eMeter’s meter data management software to utilities as a managed service in a scalable cloud-based environment via Verizon’s IP network.

The companies say the collaboration will enable a meter data management solution that can address the potential for new business applications, enhanced billing capabilities and faster customer response.  Since the new service will be cloud-based, utilities will be able to pay for it on a per-user basis, without the need for large capital investment.

"Advancing industry-specific solutions is a key component of Verizon’s ‘everything-as-a-service’ strategy," said Rilck Noel, managing director for Verizon’s Global Energy & Utilities practice.

Back End Support for Constellation Energy

Verizon also announced a tie-up with Baltimore-based utility Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG).

Constellation Energy’s commercial and industrial customers can now manage their energy consumption online as the result of a communications solution provided by the company and powered by Verizon’s IP-based network.

Constellation Energy’s new customer-access portal, NewEnergy Online®, and demand-response application, VirtuWatt™, enable customers to view their energy consumption information round-the-clock, from any location with Internet access.

In addition, Verizon said it is providing Constellation Energy with a variety of other products and services to enable the Baltimore-based company to increase efficiency and better connect its employees.

"The power company of the future is going to look a lot different from the power company of today," said Verizon’s Rilck Noel.  "Power companies will be able to provide enterprises and consumers with visibility and control of their energy consumption. Our growing relationship with Constellation showcases how this is becoming a reality, and how energy and technology industries can work together to create a new generation of cost-saving energy management solutions for customers."
