North African Solar: Pros and Cons

An ambitious European plan to produce concentrating solar power in North Africa is fraught with major challenges, but offers tremendous potential, according to a Reuters report. 

The German-led initiative, called Desertec, could be derailed by unstable politics in North Africa, lack of water, or sky-high costs. Some critics also worry that projects such as this simply continue a trend by which developed nations have exploited the resources of poorer nations.

However, proponents say that if handled correctly, Desertec could bring energy security and increased prosperity to the region, while reducing emissions of developed countries to the North.
