Methanol Fuel Cell Company Enters Market

Following three years of development and customer trial programs held in relative secrecy, Oorja Protonics (Oorja), today revealed its first commercial fuel cell product.

The Fremont, California-based startup company is targeting the material handling vehicle market with its direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology for forklifts, pallet loaders, and other material handling vehicles that charges their batteries both while they operate and under idling conditions.

Oorja claims its fuel cells are 10 to 100 times more powerful than existing methanol fuel cells and have an advantage over hydrogen technology, due to the availabilty of methanol.

Sanjiv Malhotra, Founder and CEO of Oorja Protonics, said, " Our product is well positioned to displace compressed gas and plug-in battery systems as the technology of choice in a multi-billion dollar market."

According to reports, the company plans to announce a major contract later this month with a tier 1 company that is a supplier to name-brand vehicle makers like Toyota, KION and NACCO.
