Marines To Expand Solar Power Use in Afghanistan

The US Marine Corp on Monday announced a strategy to use more renewable energy on the battlefield in an effort to protect troops.

The Associated Press reports that thousands of Marines in Afghanistan will be equipped with solar-powered equipment to reduce the need for risky fuel deliveries in enemy territory.

According to a recent three-month battlefield study, one marine was wounded for every 50 trips made for fuel or water in Afghanistan. In addition, the US military is paying tens of millions of dollars to local warlords to protect fuel convoys.

The use of solar-powered equipment will build on the experiences of a Marine company that is concluding a seven-month deployment with portable solar panels and generators for recharging radios, laptops and powering remote outposts.
