BILT preserves natural areas, shorelines, forests, streams, working landscapes and scenic vistas by holding conservation easements, facilitating land acquisitions, stewarding protected lands, restoring properties, engaging stakeholders and educating the community about land conservation and stewardship. From its inception in 1989 to date, BILT and its community partners have used these tools to preserve more than 1,300 acres of land. The Bainbridge Island Land Trust is an Accredited Land Trust. We have a dynamic and engaged staff team and Board of Directors.

Bainbridge Island is located in central Puget Sound and has a population of 23,380. It can be reached via a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle, Washington or a bridge over Agate Passage from the Kitsap Peninsula.

Position Summary

BILT is seeking a full-time Stewardship Coordinator to support the organization's conservation efforts on Bainbridge Island in the State of Washington.

The Stewardship Coordinator is a key member of our team responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust's conservation easements and owned properties, currently totaling 54 properties.

These conservation properties include 41 easements on privately owned property, 6 easements on public access areas, and 7 BILT-owned lands constituting over 800 total acres.

The Stewardship Coordinator is the first point of contact with landowners, neighbors, and community partners on a variety of issues related to our conserved lands.

In addition to carrying out monitoring work and providing technical expertise, the Stewardship Coordinator recruits, trains, and works with a team of volunteers who assist in the monitoring and maintenance of BILT's lands.

The Coordinator works closely with the Bainbridge Island Land Trust's Conservation Director and the Stewardship Committee to manage BILT's conservation lands and prioritize restoration or land management issues. The position also supports the Land Trust's efforts with new projects including conservation easement establishment, new property acquisitions, and restoration efforts.

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources management, forestry, or related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of Land Trust, natural resource research, conservation land management or other related work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, organize, engage, and manage volunteers. Strong ability to lead events and groups.
  • Working knowledge of Pacific NW native species, management of common invasive weeds, common land management issues, and restoration techniques.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong public speaking skills.
  • Proficient and demonstrated experience using GPS to collect field data and working with that data with ArcGIS geodatabase format.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience using a digital camera and managing photographic data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Organized, detailed, and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to work some non-standard hours for BILT events, including evenings and weekends.
  • Valid, insurable driver’s license/record.

Desired Qualifications

  • Current or previously held WSDA Pesticide Applicators License (or other state license), preferably with an aquatic endorsement, and experienced with the application of herbicides to control invasive species.
  • Certified chain-saw operator or willingness to become certified.
  • First Aid/CPR or Wilderness Responder Certification or willingness to become certified.

Compensation: Anticipated salary range $35,000 to $40,000 – depending on experience.
