~ Tall Timbers is a widely regarded information resource for the areas of fire ecology, game bird management, vertebrate ecology and forestry. The Research Station is recognized as the home of the study of fire ecology and is an advocate to protect the right to use prescribed fire for land management. And, the Land Conservancy is recognized as one of the nation’s leading land trusts, as it has protected traditional land uses in north Florida and south Georgia by conserving more than 128,000 acres in this region through conservation easements. ~
The history of Tall Timbers begins with Henry L. Beadel. The Research Station was originally his hunting plantation. Beadel had no heirs, so in his will he left his land and resources to create “a fire type nature preserve … to conduct research on the effects of fire on quail, turkey and other wildlife, as well as on vegetation of value as cover and food for wildlife, and experiments on burning for said objectives.” On February 7, 1958, Tall Timbers Research Station was established and Beadel’s legacy began.
In 1990, the Red Hills Conservation Association was formed as a program of Tall Timbers to conserve working lands that are used for forestry, agricultural, and recreational hunting. It focused its conservation efforts in the Red Hills Region located between Tallahassee, Florida and Thomasville, Georgia. Now known as the Tall Timbers Land Conservancy (TTLC), the land trust has expanded its service area, particularly in southwest Georgia, with projects that further Tall Timbers’ broader research mission. The results have allowed TTLC to become the largest regional land trust in Florida and Georgia.
Seeking two experienced teachers or education professionals for an stimulating five-week, 30 hours/week summer position developing lesson plans to help bring information about the Red Hills Region and local ecology into local classrooms. This summer employment opportunity is part of the Red Hills Region Outreach & Education Program of Tall Timbers Research Station & Land Conservancy, located in Leon County, Florida
- Start Date: Begin work in June 2017, with specific start date to be coordinated with successful candidates
- Location: Primary work location will be a large casual shared work space at Tall Timbers in northern Leon County. Telecommuting is allowed for a portion of your time.
- Computer Equipment: Applicants must supply their own laptop or tablet computer with sufficient capacity for writing lessons and researching topics. WiFi internet access is provided.
- Reports to: Red Hills Outreach & Education Coordinator.
- Successful candidates will lead the development of research and standards based lessons and activities for use in grade 9-12 classrooms.
- This is a new effort and we are seeking creative and motivated educators to work collaboratively to craft the arc of the lessons, shape their structure, and adapt content to best meet the needs of teachers and students.
- The Outreach & Education Coordinator will work closely with you throughout the five-week position and Tall Timbers’ world renowned research and conservation staff will be available for consultations as content experts.
- Time will be provided for candidates to learn more about the Red Hills Region and the work Tall Timbers is doing to help conserve it.
- Lesson plans created during this summer position will be part of the content for teacher workshops in the fall.
- Pending future grant funding, we would like to add to the available lesson plan topics each summer.
- The project model is similar to nature based education programs like Project Learning Tree and Project Wild.
- Our goal is to utilize this model to develop content specific to the Red Hills.
- This fits into our long-term effort of building support to protect the Red Hills Region’s ecological, scenic, and historical resources.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to develop rich standards-based lesson plans for use by other teachers that engage students.
- Knowledge of state teaching standards and ability to align lesson plans with standards.
- Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards and the ability to identify disciplinary core idea progressions in lesson plans.
- Ability to work collaboratively on project ideas while taking individual responsibility for work products.
- Some background knowledge of the ecology of the Red Hills.
Minimum Training and Experience:
- Experience developing and implementing lesson plans that engage students.
- Demonstrated capacity to collaborate on complex projects.
- Experience writing materials for teachers strongly encouraged.
- Experience in the peer review process as both the reviewee and reviewer helpful.
