Like Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), Apple (Nasdaq: APPL) may be venturing into the home energy management industry.
While Google and Microsoft launched applications to monitor energy usage (PowerMeter and Hohm, respectively), Apple may be considering a combined software and hardware system.
The maker of the popular iPhone and iPods, has reportedly filed a patent for a home energy management system, including a "dashboard" tablet device, that would build on the HomePlug standard. (First reported at the website Patently Apple).
