This week SustainableBusiness.com and Progressive Investor released the 2008 SB20 List, an annual examination of the "World's Top Sustainable Stocks." Highlights from this year include Green Building companies Apogee, Accsys Technology and Interface, as well as Renewable Energy Companies First Solar and Suzlon, and Corporate Pioneers Google and IBM.

Next-generation biofuels made the headlines this week, as Verenium Corporation (Nasdaq: VRNM) announced that it will be opening a cellulosic ethanol plant in Thailand with Japanese investment partner Marubeni Corportation.

Verenium also announced the receipt of grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to support its demonstration scale cellulosic ethanol facility in Jennings, Louisiana.

Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA.L) announced that extending its commercial alliance with cellulosic ethanol developer Iogen Energy Corporation. Shell is considering investing in a full-scale commercial plant using Iogen's technology. Shell also is increasing its ownership stake in Iogen from 26% to 50%.

In solar news, SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWR) reported 2Q profit this week and adjusted its guidance upwards for the remainder of 2008 and 2009.

Private equity firm Hudson Clean Energy Partners invested $75 million to help New Jersey-based Recurrent Energy expand its solar-as-a-service business.

And in wind power news, The Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX) announced a partnership with a German wind developer to complete a 400MW offshore wind farm of the northern coast of Germany. The entire project is expected to cost more than 1 billion euros.
