Children Sue, March to Address Climate Change

Children have had it with inaction on climate change, and they’re taking action.

On the iMatter.org website it says: Thomas Jefferson said, "Every generation needs a revolution." This is ours.

Teenage organizers plan to have 1 million children march in rallies across the world from May 8-17. Take a look at the map where rallies are planned for May 8 – you’ll be impressed.

Going to Court

And they’re not stopping there – they are taking the matter to court.

A group of attorneys representing children and young adults began to file legal actions Wednesday in every state and the District of Columbia to force government to take serious action on climate change.

They want the atmosphere to be declared as a "public trust" that deserves protection. The concept has previously been used to clean up polluted rivers and coastlines.

So far, lawsuits have been filed in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. A  federal lawsuit was filed in California.

Attorneys who are involved in the lawsuits say they will set a precedent if they win just one or two cases, which could lead to greenhouse gas emission regulations.

One of iMatter’s leaders says on the website:

My name is Alec Loorz. I’m 16 years old, and I am a climate change activist. I’ve spent my entire teenaged life traveling around giving speeches and presentations about climate change because I believe my generation was born to solve this crisis. The iMatter March is our opportunity stand up and be heard on the most important issue of our time.

Our society’s addiction to fossil fuels is messing with the perfect balance of nature and threatening the survival of our generation, the youth. It needs to stop, and we will not sit idly by as our leaders make decisions that affect our future.

So on May 8, we will march. The youth will rise up in our communities and let the world know that climate change is not about money, it’s not about power, it’s not about convenience, it is about our survival. It’s about the future of this and every generation to come. And we are ready to do whatever it takes to change it.
