~ The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance (OEPC), has a mission to provide leadership on environmental policies and compliance for the nation's premier resource management and conservation agency. ~

OEPC works with DOI Bureaus and Offices to be the Department's lead voice for a range of environmental issues. We also coordinate with other federal and state agencies to help ensure environmental stewardship and the protection of natural, cultural, and historic resources. Additionally, OEPC provides advice to the Secretary of the Interior, the Deputy Secretary, the Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management, and Budget, and other senior officials.

Position Overview 

OEPC is offering a summer internship at the Anchorage, Alaska office. The internship is unpaid and would be a minimum of 6 to 10 hours per week, beginning May or June 2015, with specific hours negotiated.

The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and currently enrolled in a college or university and receiving school credits, or accepted into a college or university for the fall semester.  

Responsibilities 

  • Interns will provide assistance with the DOI disaster preparedness program in Alaska and Alaska-based oil discharge/hazardous substance release preparedness documents.  
  • Other duties may also include general research, assisting with environmental review and comments on external federal projects, preparing draft reports and meeting summaries, and general office duties.  
  • The exposure to various statutes that govern our natural resources (such as the National Environmental Protection Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act, Oil Pollution Act of 1990, and other authorities) will help improve the intern’s understanding of federal service and the mission of the DOI and OEPC.
