Description
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is implementing an organizational Strategic Sustainability Plan, the first triple-enterprise utility in the country to institutionalize sustainability as the core of its strategic planning. In short, ours is a system for planning, managing and evaluating our business performance taking into account the financial, social and environmental impacts associated with our business activities. Currently, we are implementing the planning and performance reporting protocol. This protocol includes tasks that require extensive and detailed data collection, management and display.
Responsibilities:
Under direction, this position will assist in tasks such as the following:
- Manage and control strategic sustainability data files
- Continue to develop, implement, and maintain the long-term database, data files and master tracking for SFPUC's sustainability performance indicators, assessments, evaluations, monitoring, and periodic reporting
- Create and maintain excel spreadsheets and graphic materials for data source tracking, data collection and reports, and for web communications, PowerPoint and other presentations and handouts
- Research and update performance and reporting standards, best practices, metrics and normalization factors for performance indicators
- Critically and quickly assess received and/or unfamiliar quantitative and qualitative data
- Assess and incorporate results of complex analyses and diverse comments into draft documents
- Write and edit a variety of documents including reports, work plans, general correspondence, program and project descriptions, meeting minutes and summaries
- Track and control for retrieval all communications including email
- Monitor, research, review and analyze strategic and sustainability sources for developing facts and trends, particularly as applicable to SFPUC water, waste and power utilities and strategic planning

Required:
- Proficient, creative and responsive computer skills e.g. Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe
- Acrobat X Pro, graphics and their manipulation
- Ability to create, format and optimize design of complex XL spreadsheets and develop alternatives
- Experience with effective data collection, analysis and quality control
- Ability to maintain excellent records including how data was received, when, and from where
- Familiarity with triple bottom line (sustainable) development, policy and planning
- Excellent verbal, writing, editing, math and communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven effectiveness managing multiple details with accuracy
- Ability to manage several tasks concurrently and effectively
- Ability to operate in a highly diverse and evolving environment with multiple uncertainties and last minute changes with tact and awareness of public and political sensitivities
- Commitment to work respectfully, creatively and collaboratively with management and staff
Preferred:
- Experience in public policy and/or business/ finance
- Experience with data collection, analysis and control, particularly of organizational performance indicators
- Experience making the business case for triple bottom line (sustainable) management and development
- Experience in organizational sustainability planning and reporting, e.g. familiarity with the Global Reporting Initiative, AccountAbility, and/or other sustainability reporting initiatives
