For Love of Children (FLOC) provides educational services beyond the classroom to help students succeed from first grade through college and career. FLOC brings together students, volunteers, families, and community partners in proven programs that teach, empower, and transform.
Position Overview:
Are you interested in teaching, discovering, guiding and exploring the outdoors? If so, come work with the staff at the Outdoor Education Center of For Love of Children for a summer of outdoor adventure! The Outdoor Education Center (OEC) is seeking qualified individuals to teach outdoor and environmental education to youth. Our staff of Summer Program Counselors will have the opportunity to facilitate low and high ropes courses, lead outdoor adventure activities and create and implement environmental education curriculum.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in 15 days of paid staff training, June 2 - 16, 2012
- Serve as a leader and mentor for all participants
- Instruct groups of 10 to 14 in outdoor, environmental and adventure education classes as well as overnights, including:
High and Low ropes course facilitation
Canoeing trips
Rock climbing
Mountain biking
Recycling and Composting
Local ecology
Watershed studies
Renewable Energy with hands on solar and wind stations
Lessons in Sustainability - Use knowledge gained from staff training, camp resources, and personal experience to develop and teach lesson plans for classes and overnights
- Manage physical and emotional safety of participants: maintain and encourage a safe environment
- Residential duties: Staff will sleep in cabins with campers Monday through Friday
Cooperative Staff Responsibilities:
- Lead evening activities
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Co-teach with other counselors
Qualifications
- 2 years related work experience
- Ability to work long hours in all kinds of weather
- Experience with teambuilding, ropes/challenge courses and adventure education a plus
- Experience teaching environmental education a plus
- Desire to work with youth
- Sincere interest in environmental education
- Must be at least 18 years old
Compensation: Salary depends on experience and number of programs worked
- Room (rustic cabin accommodations in a beautiful setting) and board (high quality, organic meals)
- Ideal setting for outdoor adventures (OEC is located between the Appalachian Trial and the Shenandoah River)
- All Counselors will get certified in CPR/First Aid and ACA Water Safety Tandem Canoe
Program: Summer Program, June 2 - August 10, 2012
Location: Outdoor Education Center, a 350 acre wilderness near Harpers Ferry, WV
