China Program Education and Outreach Intern

International Rivers is a non-profit advocacy and analysis organization headquartered in Berkeley, California, and with staff and consultants working in the Brazil, China, Laos, Thailand, India, and other parts of the US. International Rivers supports communities around the world in protecting their rivers and rights. We work to halt destructive dams and encourage better methods of meeting needs for water, energy and protection from floods.

Position Overview: 

China is the country with the highest numbers of dams in the world, and in recent years, Chinese companies have taken a lead in building dams not just domestically but also abroad. Chinese banks and companies are involved in constructing some 251 dams in 68 different countries, particularly in Africa and Southeast Asian regions.

International Rivers' China Program investigates China's domestic and global environmental footprint through the lens of dam building. We are currently seeking an Education and Outreach Intern that is passionate about environmental and social issues in China and abroad, possesses solid communication, writing and editing skills, is fluent in Chinese and English, and is web savvy and knowledgeable about online social networking tools and media sources in China. The candidate will communicate with International Rivers' global staff and partners, contribute to print and web publications, and be an integral part of a dynamic Berkeley non-profit office environment.

Responsibilities: 

Specific responsibilities include:

• Assist in the outreach and distribution of an NGO guide on China's overseas dam-building. Support partners and build their capacity to use the new guide and related tools and resources.
• Assist in the development of training modules, materials and topics for a Fall training in Beijing on China's environmental and social safeguards.
• Help maintain International Rivers' Chinese language website and social media;
• Support the China program through other research and campaigns assistance when necessary.

Qualifications: 

Skills and experiences required:

• Strong research, writing, editing and communications skills.
• Familiarity with Chinese social networking sites.
• Fluent in English and Chinese.
• Ability to multitask, stay organized, and keep deadlines.
• Excellent computer skills and attention to detail.

Desired qualifications:

• Experience interacting with Chinese environmental NGOs.
• Background in policy or environmental science.
• Experience translating between Chinese and English

International Rivers offers a stimulating, casual and flexible work environment. The Education and Outreach Intern's work schedule requires an average of 20 hours per week for a 3-month minimum starting in June (start/end dates flexible). Compensation available. This internship is also available for course credit and includes training opportunities and reimbursement for local travel.
