Position Overview:

SWCA is actively seeking to fill a Forestry Specialist position based out of our Albuquerque, New Mexico office. This position will assist in all aspects of relevant projects using skilled aspects of forestry, watershed and natural resource management, and wildfire monitoring, including field data collection, data management, and reporting. This position is a regular, full-time hourly position. Pay will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities for the Forestry Specialist position include:

  • lead field crews in the data collection of forestry, fire, and watershed management data;
  • enter information into a database for later interpretation;
  • follow standard forestry data collection protocols;
  • use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools during fieldwork;
  • locate existing sites and project areas utilizing maps and GPS units;
  • prepare reports and other documents for materials to be included in documents to be written by project managers and assist with report production;
  • photograph appropriate habitat, species, and landforms, and collection and other procedures;
  • identify Southwest vegetation to species;
  • work closely with SWCA`s other managers and directors in both natural and cultural resources throughout the company to promote SWCA`s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values.

Qualifications:

Minimum of BA or BS in forestry, botany, environmental sciences, natural resource management, or related field, or 10 years of experience in related fieldwork. Familiarity with standard forestry data collection standards and methods, excellent writing skills and ability to record accurate field notes required.

Candidates must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain, operating four-wheel drive and all-terrain vehicles, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure tasks are completed in the most effective manner. Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques. Ability to work as member of a team and independently to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner is a plus.
