Introduction:

In Guatamala, this position is for the Community Municipio de Santa Luca - Aldea El Novllero Region Utatln Solol Province Quetzaltenango Community Organization La Guadalupana Organization Involved UNDP Type of Project Community Infrastructure 

Project Goals:

This project is known as "El Corazon del Bosque' - The Heart of the Forest.

Assist the Association La Guadalupana to build a Capacitation Hall, plus alternative projects such as:  English classes, Trails etc. They want to teach us cooking, dance and handcrafts classes.

This is a Maya K'iche' community association comprising of a majority of women members, which is very unusual in Guatemala. The community produce chickens and rabbits for their own consumption and for sale to the wider community. They also produce hand crafts and confectionery (marmalade, jelly), traditional women's clothing woven on backstrap looms and tailored clothes for men.

The community wants to teach local people a range of skills including Computer, Customer Service, and sustainable management of natural resources. This community recognizes that preservation of their dwindling natural resources is key to ongoing development of the community and a major goal of the project is education in this area. Development of a garden of natural medicine plants is also part of the project. 

Project Funds:

The locals and UNDP with support from UNDP small Grants programs, the Association La Guadalupana has successfully started to work in sustainable Community based eco-turism, providing a source of income for the members as well providing them a space to promote their culture and the beauties of the Indigenous Guatemalan Culture. 

Living Conditions:

The team will live in a lodge on the site of the 'Heart of the Forest' project.

Within the project site are:

'La Pila de Bautismo' - Sagrada /Baptismal Pool:  A place for religious celebration such as baptisms or to relax on hot days. This is known as 'the Baptism", which is of great spiritual significance. 

Tikalito: In honor of the historical Tikal in northern Guatemala, Corazn del Bosque. 

Temascales: They are traditional Mayan saunas that are good for general or medicinal use.

Mayan Altar: A ceremonial area where religious practices are performed by our Maya ancestors.

The Sanctuary: The tranquility and peace that inspired Corazn del Bosque (Heart of the Forest) is the ideal place to practice religious ceremonies .

The team will have access to the internet, public telephones, a grocery store and public transport. Health services etc. 

Location:

Corazn del Bosque. On the Interamerican Highway - Aldea El novillero - 5 hours from Guatemala City (Down Town) 

PMT:

One Costa Rican. From RETO One Guatemalan. 

Project Dates: 

From August 1 to September 5, 2005

Fees: 

Fees include US$1,700, which covers accommodations, all meals, transportation within the country, attraction entrance fees, and pre-departure information packages (sent by email). 

Volunteer work placement, according with your preferences. Arrival orientation and information packages. (maps, information about history, culture, security, health, etc.) Support from the staff during your stay in Costa Rica. 

Volunteer Certificate and letters of recommendation if required.
