Through our internationally-recognised certification and ecolabeling programme well-managed sustainable fisheries are recognised and rewarded in the market place, through the leadership of our partners. ~

Critically, other fisheries are incentivised to improve their performance to meet the growing demand for certified sustainable and traceable seafood choice.  Over 400 fisheries around the world, representing 14% of the annual global marine catch, are now engaged in the MSC programme and over 1200 documented improvements to the way our oceans are being fished have been recorded. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 100 countries.

Position Overview

The Marine Stewardship Council is seeking a motivated and talented Consultant to join our Fisheries Outreach team in the Gulf of Mexico.

We’re looking to engage with a Consultant residing within the immediate US Gulf of Mexico region to fill a Fishery Outreach role within our US fishery team. This is a 2-year consultancy contract.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will work to engage with Gulf of Mexico commercial fisheries, fishing industry, federal and state management agencies and other stakeholders to build awareness, interest and the capacity to engage with the MSC fisheries program.
  • You will have knowledge of and connections to the fishing industry and commercial sectors of the Gulf of Mexico, US. You’ll maintain relationships with existing MSC fishery partners and stakeholders and work closely with the US Fisheries team in assisting with the delivery of program credibility, effectiveness and the MSC mission.

Who are you?

  • Degree educated in fisheries or marine conservation biology, natural resources or environmental management,
  • Preferably prior knowledge or experience of third-party certification programs; experience in sustainability programs highly desired,
  • Strong ties to the Gulf of Mexico region and experience working in fisheries management, research, policy, and/or capture fisheries,
  • Understanding of resource sustainability issues, specifically the fisheries and seafood industry in the Gulf of Mexico.
