Job Overview

We are currently looking for a Senior Sustainability Engineer to join our Sustainability team in Holland, MI.  This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate who is passionate about sustainability and driving business in a more sustainable direction, with both big picture and fine detail initiatives.

As a Senior Sustainability Engineer, you will:

Lead development and execution of sustainable product design programs for new and existing product lines and services.  Direct supply chain material transparency work and green chemistry initiatives.  Support Haworth’s sustainability efforts regarding manufacturing process, materials, and product certification strategies. Champion Haworth’s sustainability vision and long-term objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Leads product transparency efforts, including collection and analysis of supply chain chemical inventory data and development of product-level chemical material ingredient disclosure statements to support sustainable product design strategies and product certifications
  • Leads Haworth’s green chemistry initiatives and directs and influences sourcing teams towards selection of sustainable materials that meet performance and quality standards to support sustainable product design strategies and product certifications
  • Partners with new product development organization and existing product optimization teams to effectively execute sustainable design strategies. 
  • Leads strategic initiatives related to sustainable product design and performance certifications to meet internal goals and support client strategies.
  • Conducts product Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to support sustainable product design strategies and product certifications.
  • Researches relevant sustainability issues to support development of Haworth position.
  • Supports marketing of Haworth’s sustainability story, including development of product performance tools in an effort to communicate our ongoing commitment to being a Sustainable Corporation.
  • Represents Haworth to customers, Architectural and Design (A&D) community, dealers, suppliers, and NGOs (nonprofit organization) to effectively communicate Haworth positions, goals, and achievements.
  • Maintains high technical aptitude through reviews of published literature and engagement with academic institutions, consultants, and professional peer groups to ensure we are aligned to the latest developments and thinking in the field.
  • Implements continuous improvement methods for most effective documenting and sharing of product environmental attribute information for best-in-class information. 

Do you have these required qualifications?

Required education or experience equivalent:

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline (i.e., Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Environmental Science or Sustainability), Business, or related field.
  • If no degree, 1 year of engineering, product development and/or supply chain experience, including sustainable product design concepts experience for every 1 year of education in lieu of bachelor's degree.

Required experience:

  • 6 years engineering, product development and/or supply chain experience, including sustainable product design concepts.
  • Current and continuing right to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Ability to work onsite at our headquarters in Holland, MI without relocation assistance or travel reimbursement.  

Do you have these preferred qualifications?

  • Passionate about Sustainability
  • Experience with Circular Design and Life Cycle Assessment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of corporate social responsibility.
  • Cross functional project management experience.
  • Experience working with CRM.  
  • Furniture industry experience.

Ideally, you have also demonstrated the following:

  • Good organizational and project management skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to occasionally travel overnight away from corporate offices, including internationally.
