Description

Brightworks Sustainability is seeking an experienced, qualified Materials Specialist to join our team. The Materials Specialist position performs important research & analysis, client education, and coordination tasks for our Healthy & Sustainable Materials and Embodied Carbon programs.

The role will involve working both on client projects and internal program development. Our work covers all aspects of materials in the built environment including optimizing material choices to reduce exposure to chemicals of concern, to reduce impacts from embodied carbon, to optimize material selection for end-of-use (circularity).

The employee filling this position will work directly with client project teams and internal teams. This position reports to a Brightworks Principal and will work closely with Brightworks Senior Project Managers and fellow Materials Specialists to develop tools and manage projects.

Location:

  • This position may be filled in any of our Brightworks Sustainability Portland, Berkeley, or New York offices. Please indicate your desired office location in your cover letter.
    • Note: All Brightworks employees are currently working remotely until further notice. All onboarding and training will be conducted remotely.

Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare and maintain research reports, summary documents, and presentations in a professional manner.
  2. Review documentation and deliverables by others for completeness, clarity, and quality.
  3. Interact with project team members during all project phases. Document and communicate discussions and resolutions with project team members to align deliverables with project scope.
  4. Track project milestones, deliverables, and deadlines.
  5. Work on corporate accounts and maintain a positive client relationship.
  6. Keep abreast of the latest advancements and strategies in areas of specialty such as Healthy Materials and Embodied Carbon Accounting.
  7. Follow company quality processes to deliver projects that exceed our client expectations resulting in long term relationships beneficial to the client and company.
  8. Perform analyses for evaluating project performance against third-party standard sustainability metrics.
  9. Support the senior staff in drafting proposals to help win projects and meet the company’s profitability criteria.

Requirements:

This person will have a background in and knowledge of the green building industry and existing material certifications, labels, and standards relative to health and/or embodied carbon. This person will be able to research, program implement, client educate, and clearly communicate.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience, with a preference for 5 or more years of experience, with sustainability strategy the design and construction of buildings, or building products/manufacturing.
  • Understanding of healthy and sustainability product documentation, such as HPDs, EPDs, Declare Labels, CDPH Emissions Testing, FSC certification, and more.
  • Familiarity with all, and a deeper understanding of at least one, of the following healthy and sustainable materials topics: transparency, optimization, ingredient health/restricted substance lists, embodied carbon, GHG accounting, circular economy/closed loop, responsible resource extraction, and social responsibility and ethics throughout a product lifecycle. This can be demonstrated by a sustainability accreditation, coursework, independent study, or work experience.
  • Evidence of careful attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, proactiveness, and strong time management.
  • Clear, diplomatic communication skills – written, spoken, and by phone.
  • Skilled at using Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and corresponding online programs such as Google Sheets, Google Drive, and online databases.
  • Understanding of embodied carbon software tools such as EC3 or One-Click LCA or other Life-Cycle Assessment software.
  • Basic knowledge of building systems (how buildings are put together) is a plus.
  • Work experience, specialized training, or bachelor’s degree or higher in interior design, product design, materials science, toxicology, sustainability, resource management, architecture, engineering, construction, environmental justice, or another related field.
  • Basic knowledge level of building systems design or operation.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of graphic or analysis programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) is a plus.
