~ Downeast Salmon Federation’s mission is to conserve wild Atlantic salmon, other sea-run fish and their habitats, restore a viable recreational salmon fishery, and protect other important river, scenic, recreational, and ecological resources in eastern Maine. ~

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Downeast Salmon Federation, the Project Coordinator will implement a work plan developed by three project partners collaborating on the conservation and restoration of coastal rivers, streams, and salt marshes in eastern Maine: Downeast Salmon Federation, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, and The Nature Conservancy.

The ideal candidate is a biologist/ecologist with strong community outreach and communication skills. She or he will possess a good understanding of diadromous fish and salt marsh ecology, conservation, and restoration in the region, as well as experience working collaboratively with communities, NGO’s, the private sector, municipalities, and state and federal agencies.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Support and coordinate partner activities for coastal marsh, river restoration, and fish passage improvement projects.
  • Seek and write grants to fund project planning and implementation.
  • Work with partners to review existing data and prioritize coastal smelt, brook trout, and salt marsh culvert projects.
  • Build relationships with municipal governments and community partners and provide planning, fundraising, and implementation assistance for projects to establish fish friendly crossing on priority smelt/ brook trout streams.
  • Build relationships with state and federal agency staff associated with salt marsh conservation and restoration in the region and work with partners to advance this work.
  • Develop a sea level rise, saltmarsh migration “toolbox” (a collection of information, contacts and resources) to assist municipalities, NGO’s, and other interested parties plan and take action to ensure that saltmarshes have room to migrate as sea level rises.

Supervisory Responsibility: Generally, none.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree with one to three years of related experience

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:

  • Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow-up.
  • Ability to work autonomously while keeping project partners apprised of progress, opportunities, issues and problems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive fundraising proposals.
  • Experience working with and for nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with peers, associates, and a wide range of people.
  • Passion for and knowledge of habitat conservation and restoration.
  • Willingness and ability to work differing hours and travel as (and when) necessary, occasionally on weekends and evenings.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs and its capabilities.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, etc.
  • Field work is performed in a variety of outdoor locations and requires an ability to manage uneven terrain and unexpected weather conditions.
  • Operates computer, printer, and other office equipment.
  • Significant offsite travel is required.
