The Asia Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to the development of a peaceful, prosperous, just, and open Asia-Pacific region. The Foundation supports programs in Asia that help improve governance, law, and civil society; women's empowerment; economic reform and development; and international relations. Drawing on nearly 60 years of experience in Asia, the Foundation collaborates with private and public partners to support leadership and institutional development, exchanges, and policy research.
With 18 offices throughout Asia, an office in Washington, D.C., and its headquarters in San Francisco, the Foundation addresses these issues on both a country and regional level. In 2009, the Foundation provided more than $86 million in program support and distributed nearly one million books and journals valued at over $43 million.
Position Overview:
The Asia Foundation seeks a Program Officer for its Environment Theme in San Francisco. Under the supervision of the Director of the Environment Theme, the Program Officer will be responsible for providing assistance on all aspects of Environment programming. The Program Officer will provide support to headquarters and country offices covering a broad range of environmental sectoral areas, including effective environmental governance; sustainable development; climate change adaptation and mitigation; cross-boarder environmental issues (e.g., transboundary watersheds); environment and disaster preparedness; and other related areas.
The Program Officer will also assist with program development, preparation of proposals for donors, drafting or reviewing project reports, and project and program evaluations. They will support the planning and implementation of Environment-related workshops and conferences in the U.S. and Asia. In addition, s/he will assist with the annual update of the multi-year Environment strategic plan, annual planning and budgeting exercise, and the annual results report on Environment programs.
The Program Officer will also assist the Director in such areas as research, handling general inquiries, coordinating project logistics, correspondence, filing, and other administrative tasks as assigned. Given the nature of the position, the Program Officer position requires ability and willingness to undertake travel to Asia subject to availability of travel funds.
Qualifications:
Required Experience:
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in international development and/or policy with a focus on environmental policy, governance, natural resource management, etc. Broad familiarity with and understanding of current environmental issues facing Asia (e.g., with regard to climate change, resource management, environmental governance). Excellent communications and writing skills. Experience in proposal, report writing, and strategic planning highly preferred.
Education:
Master's degree in environmental governance, environmental policy, sustainable development, environmental economics, international development, or other appropriate field.
Other Requirements:
Experience living and working in Asia preferred. Strong communication, organizational, and writing skills essential. Knowledge of Asian environmental, political, economic, and foreign policy issues essential. Must be flexible, cooperative, hardworking, and a team player. Must possess ability to pay close attention to detail while maintaining broad perspective on program goals and approaches. Willingness and capacity to travel in Asia to work with field office staff as required.
Must keep current on environmental and Asian events and issues through reading, researching, handling inquiries, and attending outside events. Knowledge of the programs and operations of The Asia Foundation helpful.
