~ At the Forest Preserve District of Kane County our mission is to acquire, hold and maintain lands in Kane County that contribute to the preservation of natural  and historic resources, flora and fauna; and to restore, restock, protect and preserve such lands for the education and pleasure of all its citizens. ~ 

Position Summary

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s Community Affair/Environmental Education Department is accepting applications for one (1) part time Naturalist Assistant.

Under direct supervision of the Environmental Education Manager, develops and conducts environmental education programs, assists with special events, and performs day-to-day operational tasks.

  • Worksite Location: Creek Bend Nature Center, Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve, St. Charles, Illinois,approximately 60 miles west of Chicago.
  • Hours/Schedule: 599 hours-per-year; Typically Monday - Friday, May include weekends and evenings. 

Essential Position Duties & Functions

Operations:

  • Assists in the planning and preparation of District educational programs.
  • Conducts on and off-site educational programs consonant with the purposes of the District to a variety of audiences, both in numbers present and the type and level of interest.
  • Greets and answers questions from the public; Participates in development of procedures that enhance the public participation in programs and use of forest preserves.
  • Assists in research, design and maintenance of educational exhibits for the Nature Center and its outreach programs.
  • Assists with upkeep and maintenance of educational materials and supplies.
  • Assists in preparing information for distribution to the public concerning District nature programs.
  • Participates in District-wide educational initiatives.
  • Possesses and maintains a valid and current Illinois Driver’s License free from suspension or revocation during term of employment; must maintain insurability with the District’s fleet insurance carrier.
  • Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the Employee Handbook.
  • Works irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Obtain and maintain all required licenses and certifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Establishes positive relationships with community and preserve users.
  • Provides input during the program development process. 

Staff Supervision:

  • Supervises interns and summer seasonals; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Additional duties may be essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Age Requirement: 18 years old.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecological sciences, environmental education, or closely related field.
  • Experience: Two (2) years in environmental education, natural resources, parks and recreation, or closely related field; or an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience and training.
  • Certifications/Licenses: CPR/1st AID/AED; all licenses/certifications must be obtained within one year of employment. NAI certification a plus. KCCN and/or Master Naturalist certification a plus.
