Description
Responsibilities:
Work at sea, collecting and recording data and biological samples for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) aboard commercial fishing vessels. Trips vary in length from one to fourteen days.
Positions are located in ports from Maine to North Carolina.
Qualifications:
* A BS in Marine Biology or Biology is required.
* Must be willing to commit to the program for at least a year.
* Must have own transportation.
* At-sea experience in commercial fishing or marine research is desirable.
* Ability to handle extreme conditions at sea is imperative.
* Must be US Citizen, Canadian Citizen, or non-citizen who has legally resided inUS for the past 2 years.
Compensation:
These are full time positions based on an average of 12 sea daysper month. Sea day and land hour rates based on experience and qualifications, starting at $185/sea day and $12/land hour. Health (50%), dental (50%), vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Training:
Three-week, paid training courses held periodically throughout the year. Next training session begins September 12, 2005. Training includes instructions on sampling protocols, gear, fisheries, fish identification, marine mammal/sea turtle identification and safety training.
