~ The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Sustainability group is responsible for demonstrating industry leadership in steel sustainability and enhancing the competitiveness of the North American steel industry by credibly documenting and effectively communicating the environmental, social and economic sustainability attributes of steel as a material and as a component of end products. ~

Position Overview

The Manager, Sustainability will be based in our Washington, DC Office and will be responsible for a wide range of activities.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as the North American steel industry's technical expert on LCI/LCIA/LCA modeling and practices;
  • Analyzing environmental research and messages from competing materials;
  • Developing detailed studies, white  papers, articles or presentations that demonstrate the sustainablity advantages of steel vs. competing materials;
  • Scanning the environmental horizon for threats and opportunities relative to steel, including regulatory changes and technological breakthroughs;
  • Assisting in the review of federal regulations and supporting analyses for those regulations;
  • Working with member companies and their customers to educate them on sustainability-related issues and opportunities;
  • Representing AISI at relevant national and international standards organizations such as ASTM, ANSI and ISO; and
  • Completing other sustainability-related projects as assigned, in support of the overall AISI business plan.

Qualifications

  • Minimum M.S. in environmental science or engineering from an accredited four-year college or univeristy
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in sustainability issues and related environmental initiatives, including knowledge of domestic and international LCA methodologies and federal environmental regulatory programs, especially the Clean Air Act.
  • Must be highly motivated, meticulously organized, customer oriented and possess strong interpersonal and communications skills as well as the ability to function effectively in a team environment.
  • Travel 10-20%, primarily domestically with occasional international travel.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or familiarity with national/international standards organizations including ASTM and ISO.
  • Experience with LCA studines that include steel or other metals.
  • Working knowledge of GaBi or other commercial LCA software preferred.
  • Understanding of greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement protocols and GHG accounting methodologies for a range of materials (steel, aluminum, wood) especially in the automotive and/or construction markets.
  • Experience with the collection and analysis of life cycle inventory (LCI) data, including ongoing maintenance, dissemination and quality control of the collected data.
  • Basic understanding of green building rating systems such as U.S. Green Building Coucil's LEED v4, Green Building Initiative's Green Globes and International Living Futures Institute's Living Building Challenge.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations to internal and external audiences.
