Description

As one of the nation's most powerful public interest advocacy organizations, the State PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups) uncover and fight threats to the environment, public health, consumer interests and democratic government. In doing so, we have often encountered opposition from powerful corporations, entrenched politicians, and other special interests.

Yet through careful research and smart political strategies, we have overcome their resistance time and time again, passing groundbreaking legislation across the country, including the nation's strictest power plant emission limits (Massachusetts), most comprehensive reduction of toxic mercury (Washington state), strongest protections from predatory lending (New Mexico), most stringent water runoff regulation, (Wisconsin), and strongest renewable energy requirement (California).

Our efforts on the local, state, and federal levels, as well as in corporate boardrooms across the country through our direct corporate campaigns, have yielded many protections for our communities and citizens, helped build an ever-strengthening public interest movement, and continued to alter the national dialogue on profound issues like global warming and health care as we push forward towards concrete and lasting social change.

In 1981, the State PIRGs helped establish the Fund for Public Interest Research to support the activities of our canvassers, organizers, researchers, attorneys, and advocates across the country, and to ensure the continued growth and vitality of the public interest movement.

The Fund enhances the capacity of state PIRGs through economies of scale, centralizing such functions as direct mail campaigns, bookkeeping, publications, recruitment, and program development. The Fund has also grown into the nation's leading citizen outreach network, working with some of the nation's leading progressive organizations, including the Sierra Club, the Human Rights Campaign, and Save the Children.

Job Description:

The Fund is currently hiring an Investments Management Administrative Assistant to help manage monetary investments on behalf of the Fund, the State PIRGs, and all PIRG-affiliated organizations and to generate more funding to support our critical public interest campaigns. The Assistant will help in the evaluation of various investment options (including mutual funds, bonds, stock investments, and money market accounts) and market trends to determine appropriate investment opportunities, balancing our desire for high returns with risk concerns and the need for proper diversification of our assets.

The Assistant will work with Fund budget staff and state PIRG directors to ensure that newly generated income is quickly invested for optimum growth. The Administrative Assistant will also help monitor fee structures for various investment options and use our aggregate investment power to negotiate with financial vendors for the lowest fees and highest yields.
