Position Overview

CALSTART has an immediate opening for a highly-motivated person to join our team as an Industry/Market Analyst. This is an exciting time for building the clean transportation technology industry and the opportunity to improve air quality, prevent climate change, and create jobs.

The Industry/Market Analyst will play an important role in supporting high impact clean transportation projects and vehicle deployments by developing and managing market and industry research, assessment, survey, modeling, business case, commercialization pathway and forecasting activities. The position will be based in the CALSTART solar-powered headquarters in Pasadena, California.

Note: The full-time position is ideally in the CALSTART Headquarters in Pasadena, California; other CALSTART office locations may be possible.  

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate must have excellent analytical skills and experience in designing and managing market and industry research and analysis projects. The candidate will be able to convey information through excellent written, digital and spoken communication skills.

Responsibilities

He or she will also have the necessary skills to design and manage a variety of advanced transportation analysis and support projects and must be able to perform the following tasks with strong competency:

  • Track and evaluate market trends of advanced/alternative fuel vehicle technologies;
  • Acquire, analyze and manage information, particularly as involves vehicle volume, market segmentation, market penetration rates, cost of ownership and related analysis;
  • Synthesize business implications with a grasp of market economics/dynamics to deliver market forecasts and analysis;
  • Build and analyze total cost of ownership and market forecast models, derive meaningful results, and update them periodically with new information;
  • Perform statistical data analysis with Excel and SAS, SPSS, or Stata, or Matlab and R, with high proficiency;
  • Produce high quality reports that are well written and present strong visual communications with quantitative insights, and make presentations with this material;
  • Coordinate closely with team members, manage project tasks and timelines; and
  • Conduct surveys and perform primary and secondary research and analysis.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree (preferably in Engineering, Math, Statistics, Market Research or Economics) and at least 3 to 5 years’ experience in product planning, competitive intelligence, industry analysis or strategy – ideally at a car or truck OEM or related consultant.  The candidate must have existing knowledge of and experience with the transportation industry, preferably with medium- and heavy duty commercial vehicles.
  • The candidate must have a high degree of proficiency in written and oral communications and must have the capability of presenting to and working with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • The candidate must work well in a team environment, display personal initiative and be driven by a passion for the clean transportation industry.
  • It is essential that the candidate be well organized and have strong project management capabilities.
  • The candidate should be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of applications, with a high degree of competence in Word, PowerPoint and be extremely adept with spreadsheets.  
  • The candidate must also be able to demonstrate initiative, independently manage time, and multi-task in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • A strong attention to detail will be required.

Additional Skills and Experience

The following skills and experience are highly preferred or would open additional opportunities. They will be viewed favorably and will provide an advantage:

  • Specific knowledge of and expertise with clean and advanced transportation technologies, infrastructure or fuels.
  • Deep expertise with life-cycle cost analysis and payback analyses.
  • Proficient with data visualization and tools like Tableau, QlikView, or Datawrapper.
  • Experience with VBA, SQL, and database tools.
  • Experience with JD Power, RL Polk, ACT/LMC, JATO Dynamics and other vehicle database providers.
  • Experience with product pricing and/or new product development/launch.
  • Media training or automotive journalism experience.
  • Membership and/or Certification by relevant professional organization, such as: Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP).

Compensation and Benefits

CALSTART offers a strong compensation package. In addition to a competitive salary, CALSTART currently offers employees a company-paid HMO health plan including dental and vision care. The compensation plan also includes a retirement plan equivalent to 8 percent of the annual salary. CALSTART allows for flexible work hours as appropriate, and provides funding for transit. The organization also has a strong interest in employee growth and skills development.
