Position Overview

The Generation Market Analyst will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day activities of Energy New England’s Asset Optimization program as part of the Operations team, managing traditional generation resources and behind the meter distributed energy resources. This individual will develop generation offer price strategies, and coordinate with fuel suppliers, customers, and ISO New England. This requires an understanding of ISO market rules to develop strategies to maximize resource value.

Generation technologies include centralized and distributed natural gas and oil fired simple and combined cycle units, cogeneration facilities, and renewable energy facilities including solar, hydro, and wind. This position will contribute to our growing Operations Center capabilities including demand management, behind the meter generation, and energy storage.

Responsibilities

Key Objectives:

  • Support peak load management initiatives on both the demand and supply side
  • Analyze ISO New England forecast, operational and settlement market data
  • Understand ISO market rules and evaluate impacts to customer interests
  • Assist in the development of generator evaluation and performance reports
  • Review generator performance from both merchant and load hedging perspectives
  • Monitor spot and forward fuel and energy markets to asset optimization opportunities
  • Assist in building and refining models, tools, and processes that support the company’s efficiency and scalability
  • Support asset management new business development initiatives

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Operations Research or Management, or appropriate discipline
  • Proven sound analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Expert capabilities with Microsoft Office applications, particularly spreadsheet skills
  • Database report generation and/or application development a plus
  • Rotating weekend and off-hour market and bidding coverage required
  • Prior northeast / power pool / RTO market experience in an asset management role a plus
  • 3-5 years experienced preferred, but willing to consider entry-level candidates with relevant industry course study or educational background

Desired Attributes:

  • The Generation Market Analyst should have strong analytical and communications skills, a high degree of flexibility, be ready to learn, show initiative, and contribute in a small team environment
  • This person should be comfortable performing multiple tasks and supporting a variety of projects related to energy and supply management, portfolio modeling and optimization, transaction monitoring including credit and risk reporting, risk and credit management, and renewable energy
  • The individual should be a self-starter who is comfortable and proficient using multiple software applications and data and system modeling
