~ Central Oregon LandWatch (“LandWatch”), based in Bend, Oregon, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1985. LandWatch plays a vital role in achieving a responsible, balanced approach to planning for and conserving Central Oregon’s land and water resources, while recognizing the needs of future generations. ~

Our mission is to protect and conserve the region’s ecosystems and wildlife habitats, to foster thriving, sustainable communities and to spread the costs and benefits of growth equitably across the community as a whole.

LandWatch pursues its mission by monitoring government programs and decisions to ensure they are in compliance with federal, state and local laws and rules and, where necessary, seeking administrative and court review of the government actions.

LandWatch also seeks to work with local governments, developers, and other stakeholders in adopting programs and designing developments that help protect the environment and the livability of the area.

The organization’s work is in four major program areas:

  • Rivers and Springs
  • Farms and Forests
  • Urban Planning, and
  • Wildlife Habitat.

Job Description

The Executive Director oversees all aspects of the organization and is directly responsible for the development and execution of LandWatch’s Strategic Plan. The Executive Director is supervised by the Board of Directors of LandWatch.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Fundraising and expanding LandWatch’s base of support
  • Guiding employees and internal communications
  • Supporting work of the program and operations directors in their work
  • Reviewing legal briefs, contracts and other legal materials
  • Preparing annual budgets and reviewing their implementation
  • Working with the board of directors to assist their governance
  • Elevating public communications and media presence

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience, skills and accomplishments in the following areas:

  • Strategic and operations planning
  • Program development and financing
  • Understanding of nonprofits
  • Development, management and support of staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including public speaking
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of interests
  • Self-awareness and ability to listen to staff/community members

Experience and skills in the following areas will be to the candidate’s advantage:

  • Law degree
  • Advocacy experience
  • Familiarity with natural resource, urban planning and environmental issues
  • Familiarity with Central Oregon community and issues

Additional Information

Central Oregon is one of the fastest-growing regions not only in the West, but also in the country. This creates unique problems as well as opportunities. While there are increased pressures to erode land protections, there is also a growing awareness and base of support for preserving the region. The Executive Director will play a key role in helping to sustain the quality of life in the Deschutes Basin for future generations.

Compensation

  • The salary has a minimum of $70,000 and is negotiable, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • The benefits package includes health and dental insurance, paid vacation, family and health leave, paid holidays, and retirement benefits.
