~ More than 40 years ago, the founders of Elings Park had a unique vision for this spectacular site: To provide recreational facilities in an exceptional setting for the benefit of all citizens of the Santa Barbara area. ~

As part of their plan, they insisted that the park would be created, maintained and operated without the use of a single taxpayer dollar.

From the park’s beginnings in 1965, its founders – under the leadership of Jerry Harwin – knew this spot halfway between Goleta and Carpinteria would be ideal for the recreational needs of a highly active community. Indeed, today that Elings Park Foundation provides a place for sports and athletic endeavors for people of all ages, from all neighborhoods, and from all walks of life. It also serves as a model for other communities, demonstrating that a non-profit foundation can operate an extraordinary park without the need for government funds.

Position Overview

The Executive Director is the principal management official and leader of the Elings Park Foundation. Responsible for administration of public programs, projects and plans for a well-established nonprofit organization. Incumbent plans, directs and supervises the stewardship of Elings Park, a 230-acre urban park located in the City of Santa Barbara, CA.

Responsibilities

Board of Directors:

  • Collaborates with the Board to achieve Foundation's mission and implement its business and strategic plans.

Financial Performance:

  • Develops and manages programs to ensure the financial integrity of the organization.
  • Responsible for the fiscal condition of Elings Park, which includes preparation and submission of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements.
  • Responsible for implementation of operating and capital budgets, as well as, management of capital campaigns, fundraising projects, and associated initiatives.
  • Responsible for fundraising and development of financial resources necessary to support Elings Park's operating and capital budgets.
  • Responsible for execution of documents, agreements, and other instruments on behalf of the Foundation.

Park Superintendent:

  • Collaborates with the Board of Directors and its committees.
  • Supervises the execution and administration of the Park's operating budgets, capital improvements and maintenance schedules.
  • Coordinates recreational, athletic, and educational activities and programs.
  • Seeks to establish creative methods for offering conservation, restoration and community engagement projects.
  • Develops goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures as necessary.
  • Serves as primary liaison to local governments, foundations, athletic organizations, as well as community, homeowner groups and the public.
  • Selects, manages, directs and supervises Park staff.
  • Implements management practices that promote sustainability and appreciate the ecological value of Elings Park.

Sales, Events and Marketing Manager:

  • Recommend and achieve annual business plans, including development of membership campaigns and sales initiatives.
  • Plan and direct all revenue generating enterprises for the park, including individual memberships, corporate pledges, donor packages, and sponsorship programs.
  • Recognize sales trends and prepare strategies to guide park operations accordingly.
  • Develop customer engagement and membership programs using a data driven approach to recruitment and increasing the Park's donor base.
  • Evaluate sales operations to determine competitiveness with industry trends.
  • Cultivate relationships with new and existing partners to increase sales, memberships, fundraising and entrepreneurial projects.

Qualifications

  • Any combination of formal education equivalent to a bachelor's degree.
  • 5 or more year's senior nonprofit paid management experience.
  • 5 or more years paid experience in public facility management.
  • Budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Strong organizational ability including planning, delegating, program development.
  • Demonstrated success marketing and promoting a nonprofit entity.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector.
  • Skilled at collaborating and motivating board members and volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, manage and supervise staff.
  • Effective public speaking ability.

Preferred Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will have significant experience in leading and managing organizations similar to the Elings Park Foundation, which should include direct involvement in day-to-day operational management, development and maintenance of public facilities.
  • Position requires performing a variety of professional, administrative, and programmatic tasks on a daily basis.
  • Demonstrated success planning and coordinating with staff many special events, projects and activities involving volunteers and other interested parties.
  • Ability to serve as the Park's liaison to the Board of Directors, standing committees, local governments, external organizations, and the public.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of managing public facilities and open space.
  • Well versed in management practices that promote sustainability and natural resources conservation.
  • Skilled in public program and project management.
  • Expertise in maintenance, construction, and repair of public recreational facilities.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of staff supervision.
  • Comfortable developing public recreation, athletic, and conservation programming.
