Position Overview

New Ecology is seeking candidates for the role of Energy Engineer Intern in its Boston office. This would be a summer internship (approximately three months), working full-time to support the engineering team at New Ecology. This is a small cross-functional team that performs energy audits, calculates energy savings with spreadsheet tools, does energy simulations with standard modeling software, and generally provides engineering support for the organization.

This position will provide an excellent introduction and ongoing knowledge development for energy efficiency in buildings and more generally for building science, sustainable energy, renewable power, modeling techniques, and analysis.

Schedule:

  • Full time (40 hours per week), starting early June and ending August 31, 2019 (to coincide with MassCEC’s summer session).
  • Though most of the data analysis will be done on computers in an office setting, we would like the intern to accompany our staff on some site audits this summer (typically located in greater Boston), but may require occasional travel within the state of MA.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support energy audit and data analysis work;
  • Attend site audits and collect data in the field;
  • Develop spreadsheet calculations for energy efficiency measures;
  • Report writing and research special topics.
  • Review building plans and extract important information for use in an energy simulation;
  • Develop building geometry from CAD and other types of files for import to modeling tools;
  • Use building codes to develop baselines.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have or be working on a degree in a related field such as mechanical engineering, preferably having classes in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics, and will have some experience performing research, analysis, and reporting in an academic or professional setting.
  • A demonstrated ability to be responsible for projects and deliverables, and to be creative in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes is expected.

Additionally:

  • It will also be helpful to have proficiency with 2D or 3D drawing/design software such as Autocad or Solidworks as well as Microsoft Office, with advanced experience with MS Excel.
  • Helpful but not required experience includes a background in building construction or renovation, a familiarity with building science, ASHRAE standards, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and green building programs such as LEED and Energy Star.

Compensation: This is an hourly paid position, funding however may be contingent upon support from outside grants such as the MassClean Energy Internship program.
