Position Overview

The Travel Wind Technician is a position for experienced technicians. Candidates must have up-to-date certifications.

The role is Responsible for operations, and maintenance of wind turbines traveling throughout the United States. Candidate will troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical system on wind turbines while maintaining a sharp focus on individual and team safety.

Candidate will also support turbine warranty and mechanical completion inspections from time to time. Candidate performs a variety of administrative duties as well as responsible for EH&S and other relevant compliances. Requires basic computer skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, email programs, and computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting tools.

This position requires fieldwork and is in a wind farm environment, primarily during normal business hours. However, there will be changes of shift including some weekends, overtime, and includes exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity. Candidate’s should have the ability to climb turbine towers daily (up to 300 feet). Participate in an on-call schedule. Willing to work overtime, holidays, weekends, and on short notice during

planned/unplanned/emergency site outages. Helps in all areas of facility operations as directed by the Site Manager. Reports directly to Field Supervisor. Willing to travel approximately 100% with 6 weeks of continuous travel then 6 days off.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect the exterior and physical integrity of towers
  • Climb towers to inspect or repair turbine equipment
  • Collect turbine data for testing or research and analysis
  • Perform routine maintenance on wind turbines
  • Test electrical components and systems, as well as mechanical and hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical malfunctions
  • Service underground transmission systems, wind field substations, or fiber optic sensing and control systems
  • Replace worn or malfunctioning components
  • Maintenance schedules are largely determined by hours of operation but can also vary by manufacturer. Most manufacturers now recommend annual maintenance, which involves visual inspections of components and lubricating parts. For turbines that operate year-round, typical maintenance may occur one to three times a year. Still, turbines are monitored electronically 24 hours a day from a central office. If a problem is detected, wind techs must travel to the worksite and perform as-needed service.
  • Wind techs use safety harnesses and a variety of hand and power tools to do their work. They also use computers to diagnose electrical malfunctions. Wind turbines integrate most monitoring equipment into the nacelle, which can be viewed on site.

Qualifications & Critical Skills

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical school certificate, and wind industry training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current Certificates if available
  • Must be proficient with computers, standard software applications, SCADA.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must exhibit 100% commitment to individual and team safety at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel on short notice
  • Experience with multiple wind turbine supplier technology.
  • Electrical and/or mechanical troubleshooting. Additional technical education (wind turbine) a plus and will be seriously considered.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electronic testing equipment (i.e. voltage testers, amp clamps, oscilloscopes, and various hand and power tools).
  • Comfort working in confined spaces and at heights over 100 meters.
  • Physically and mentally able to perform the job per the essential functions
  • Smart Phone required

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires 90% traveling
  • Must be willing to work in demanding physical and inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb wind turbines and work in height
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, and bend for prolonged periods of time.
  • Strong attention to detail and execution excellence.
  • Good interpersonal and customer relation skills.
  • Work cooperatively or independently and inspires a team effort with all tasks. Communicate pro-actively.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and write in English.
