The Karuna School, an independent college preparatory day school for grades 9-12 is seeking a Director of Development to begin immediately to gather resources to support and advance the design and shaping of this developing educational institution.
The mission of the Karuna School is to create a new model for learning in high school that educates the mind and awakens the heart. Our goal is to enable students to realize their strengths, become their authentic selves, and develop the tools to create change within themselves and in the world. We envision an intimate school community of between 100 and 150 students working with enthusiastic teachers, mentors, parents and administrators.
The Karuna School will be located in a suburb west of Boston and will open its doors to students in September, 2011. We will offer a traditional high school curriculum enriched by an in-depth exploration of the world's great traditions of compassionate action, peace making, and environmental stewardship. Our offerings will include a 4-year emotional literacy curriculum, training in contemplative practices, and global service learning. Courses will emphasize experiential learning and address multiple intelligences. The fundamental ethic of our school community will be to support each person to feel seen, heard, and safe.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Development will report to the Founders until a Head of School is in place. S/he will be responsible for facilitating the school's advancement program. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Administrative staff and the future Head of School, s/he will have the responsibilities of designing and then implementing all fundraising programs, including the Annual Appeal, creating and managing the development office infrastructure and developing marketing and public relations plans and materials. As a new school, a major aspect of this position is the cultivation of major donors for an initial Capital Campaign.
Qualifications:
A minimum of 3 years professional non-profit fund raising success is required. Experience with a start-up non-profit and running a Capital Campaign is preferred. Experience in an independent school setting is a plus as well as strong collaborative and organizational skills, excellent written communication, and commitment to personal growth and contemplative practice.
