Description

Founded in 2001, Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is working to restore the resilience, diversity, and abundance of marine ecosystems to ensure that our oceans are a significant source of wild-caught fish that can help feed the world.

Do you want to make a difference protecting and restoring the abundance of the world’s oceans?

  • Oceana is seeking a Communications Manager to join its U.S. policy team.

Come join a dedicated team of professionals who are working to protect marine wildlife while also enhancing the capacity of the oceans to feed a growing world population. Ocean conservation is not only critical to reducing the impacts of climate change but also to save the livelihoods of fishers, their families, and their communities.

We achieve measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. Our campaigns extend to countries that, combined, govern nearly one-third of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, Canada and the 27 countries in the European Union.

Position Overview

The communications manager is responsible for the day-to-day communications efforts surrounding Oceana’s campaign to stop the expansion of dirty and dangerous offshore drilling activities in the United States, while also promoting clean energy alternatives like offshore wind.

The communications manager reports to the senior director of communications. Due to COVID-19, you will work remotely until further notice. You will be notified if/when working from the DC office is required.

Responsibilities:

  • The communications manager oversees all public relations functions for the campaign, from securing quality news coverage and speaking engagements, to orchestrating high-level events and advertising campaigns, to developing strategic materials and managing relationships with journalists, partners, vendors, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • This position requires a superb communicator who is detail-oriented, team-oriented, organized, high energy, interested in conservation issues, and well-versed with news organizations. Candidates must thrive in a fast-paced environment that requires quick decision-making under pressure, strong multi-tasking skills, and a customer service attitude.
  • Strong candidates for this position will have a bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field, and at least five years of public relations experience, with expertise in media relations, including pitching and writing for the media.
