Description

The Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) fights for structural change at the local, state, and national levels to attain racial justice, build community wealth, and realize a just transition to a 100% renewable energy future.

We mobilize Long Islanders through political education, grassroots organizing, leadership development, and the creation of cooperative economic institutions to redistribute wealth and power.

Position Overview

We seek a talented, proactive, and dedicated Climate Justice Organizer to staff our NY Renews coalition work alongside LIPC’s sustainability organizer. This is an opportunity to work with a huge diversity of local, regional, and statewide partners on one of the most exciting climate and equity campaigns in the country.

NY Renews is a coalition of over 280 environmental, justice, faith, labor, and community groups, and the force behind the nation’s most progressive climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. LIPC is a steering committee member of the coalition and was instrumental in leading the campaign to pass this bill in 2019.

Position Description & Responsibilities

Federal THRIVE Work

  • NY Renews is the lead partner in New York State for a strong new national coalition called the Green New Deal Network that is seeking to get legislation and other policies enacted consistent with the THRIVE agenda (https://www.thriveagenda.com/), which is now embodied in federal legislation. With the change in federal administration, now more than ever it is important to both make our New York legislative and administrative efforts a success to show what is possible, and to use the power we have built to influence federal policy making. In this moment we have an almost unprecedented opportunity to continue leading not just on climate change but on justice and equity in this transition. The federal government can leverage power and funding far beyond most state level victories.
  • The Climate Justice Organizer will continue to develop our new grassroots federal campaign forward through targeting New York’s Senators (particularly Majority Leader Schumer) and key House members to support our aggressive federal climate justice and just transition agenda. This will be done by engaging NY Renews members across NY to ensure their involvement in the efforts of the coalition.

Implementation of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act  (CLCPA)

  • Now that the CLCPA has passed, New York State is determining the details of how to achieve a renewable energy economy by 2050 and to implement the CLCPA’s climate justice provisions. The critical decisions, which will ultimately be incorporated into binding state regulations, are being made through a process involving multiple state agencies that is difficult for average New Yorkers and impacted communities to impact.
  • The major job of the Climate Justice Organizer will be to work with a team to implement strategies to bring average New Yorkers into this process.
  • The organizer will do this through the following tactics and strategies, but not limited to:
    • Pressuring relevant elected officials and the Governor in line with our vision for a renewable energy economy, a just transition, and economic democracy; utilizing traditional tools of community organizing including phone calls, e-mails, demonstrations; and earned media and social media work.
    • LIPC helped establish the “People’s Climate Action Council” within NY Renews, a regular series of meetings of our supporters to monitor the state implementation process and to coordinate grassroots responses.

Base Building and Leadership Development

  • The role of the Climate Justice Organizer is to help build and expand the existing LIPC Climate committee, including developing, training and maintaining members as well as identifying new leaders.

Qualifications

  • Fierce commitment to social, economic, racial, and climate justice;
  • Highly proactive, takes initiative on all projects from conception to completion;
  • Exceptional ability to juggle multiple, simultaneous projects with cross-cutting stakeholders and deadlines, and having an attention to detail;
  • People-person, able to foster genuine working relationships of trust and solidarity with a wide variety of partners;
  • Excellent organizational, writing, communication, and public-speaking skills;
  • (Preferred) 2 years experience working for a community, labor, or environmental organization; and
  • (Preferred) relationships with leadership of NY economic justice, environmental justice, and/or labor organizations.

Terms of Employment

  • Position is a full-time position with health, retirement, vacation. The position is contracted for one year and might be extended which will be dependent on funding.
  • The salary range for this position is $48,500 – $60,000 based on experience. We offer competitive compensation, relative to experience.
