~ Sierra Club is leading a nationwide effort to eliminate coal's contribution to global warming no later than 2030 and replace the existing coal infrastructure with a clean energy economy fueled by wind, solar, energy storage and energy efficiency. ~

Sierra Club  is working to stop the construction of new coal and gas-fired power plants, retire and replace the existing fleet of coal plants and gas plants, and keep the U.S. coal reserves underground and out of world markets. Position Overview

Context:

We are seeking candidates for the position of Campaign Representative (Kansas). This role plans and guides the strategies and activities  to advance Sierra Club's full suite of clean energy for all initiatives, to move beyond fossil fuels in Kansas.

Scope:

The Campaign Representative is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of strategies and activities to advance Sierra Club's portfolio of clean energy for all initiatives, including but not limited to Beyond Coal, Beyond Dirty Fuels, Ready for 100 and Clean Transportation in Kansas, and as assigned. Collaborates with various internal departments, programs, strategic external partners, coalitions, state chapter and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of strategic coordinated campaigns to move Kansas off of coal to 100% renewable energy and energy efficiency, with no new natural gas infrastructure and increasing electrification of transportation and the building sector. 

Ensures strategic alignment of the state campaign with regional and national goals and objectives. Sets priorities for spending campaign resources and expenses. Coordinates campaign planning and strategies with Sierra Club staff and volunteer Chapter leadership in Kansas. Creates, coordinates and executes, as appropriate, utility-based or state-based campaign work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. Oversees day-to-day operational aspects of campaign, acting as a senior project manager without direct supervisory authority over staff on the team. Prepares and submits weekly progress reports. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public.

  • This is a category 4 exempt position.
  • Sierra Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Sierra Club employees are not eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. Sierra Club does not sponsor H1B visas.

Job Activities

  1. Within a collaborative framework and in consultation with key stakeholders, leads and facilitates the development of a strategic campaign plan, goals and objectives for the Sierra Club’s efforts to move Kansas to 100% clean energy     . Develops, executes and manages the day-to-day implementation of the campaign, working in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapter, Communications Department, Organizing and Online Organizing departments       and volunteer leadership to ensure the execution of a campaign to foster a just and equitable transition off of fossil fuels to clean energy solutions     .
  2. In collaboration with the Sierra Club stakeholders listed above, engages key strategic partners in frontline communities, labor allies, elected and appointed decision makers, executives in the clean energy and transportation industries, and other strategic stakeholders to ensure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities for a just and equitable transition to clean energy. 
  3. Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers.  Provides conservation training and motivation to staff and volunteers.  Uses data, regulations, technical reports, and political understanding to craft strategies to end fossil fuel use and implement day-to-day actions.
  4. Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion.  Works to develop volunteers and to ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  5. Directs media outreach activities related to the campaign in collaboration with the Communications Department and Kansas      Chapter.  Serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  6. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
  7. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies. Helps build, maintain and lead or participate in coalitions and coalition efforts.
  8. Supports Sierra Club’s power building goals by ensuring campaign strategies and activities are designed to build a base of leaders and increase and deepen strategic partnerships.  This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring Sierra Club participates in strategically aligned coalitions and coalition efforts. Works to develop volunteers and to ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  9. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration by departments; fosters creativity among team members.
  10. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

Seasonal Activities:

Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines and during peak activity periods. Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required. Periodic travel required.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills:

  • B.A./B.S. degree in energy, environmental, political, legal, or closely related field. A college degree is not required if the candidate has applicable experience in a relevant field. 
  • Significant experience in the planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns, which includes experience:
    • planning and managing successful state- or regional-level legislative and/or issue campaigns;
    • working with attorneys and utilizing legal advocacy;
    • lobbying;
    • media relations and strategic communications;
    • working with senior-level political and business leaders;
    • experience working with organized labor is a plus.
  • Strong grasp of energy policy and regulatory landscape will be weighed heavily; experience in a different field that includes knowledge of legal/policy/regulatory regimes will be considered.
  • Familiarity with the electric sector, including coal- and gas-fired generation and renewable energy.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively convene multiple internal and external stakeholders and impartially mediate competing priorities in service to collective vision and goals.
  • Sense of humor, patience, strong emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to create rapport and inspire trust.
  • Self-starter with project management and demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging political landscape to advance policy goals.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to incorporating principles of justice, equity and inclusion into team leadership, and to building an organization that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, as well as promoting a culture of learning and growth.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required. A background check will be required upon job acceptance

Note: This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.
