Founded in 1954, Thorne has a rich history and has reached more than 300,000 children through its Summer Camp, School Year (Pre-K and Elementary), and Nature for All Programs.

Job Purpose

As part of the Senior Leadership Team, the Business Operations Director provides strategic leadership in the areas of business strategy, finance, accounting, operations, and human resources management. (The Business Operations Director reports to the Executive Director.)

Position Overview

The Business Operations Director works in partnership with the Executive Director and Thorne’s Directors and Managers to ensure the successful implementation of Thorne’s strategic plan which calls for growth and diversification of the organization’s financial resources and programming.

The Business Operations Director’s primary functions include: support Trustees, Directors, and Managers with business strategy to ensure the organization and its programs provide a maximum return on investment (both financial and mission); prepares and manages the organization’s annual budget and operations plan; plans and manages cash flow; directs bookkeeping; directs financial controls, reporting, and auditing; assists with the financial components of foundation and government grant compliance; and directs human resources and administrative operations.

Flexibility exists to expand and contract duties to best support the skills, interests, and goals of the top candidate and the needs of the organization and its staff. Expanded responsibilities could include strategic operational management of Thorne’s earned income programs and philanthropic efforts, including oversight of Director and Manager level staff.

Responsibilities 

Desired Outcomes:

  • Exceptional business strategy support provided to Trustees, Directors, and Managers
  • Exceptional engagement as member of Thorne’s Senior Leadership Team
  • Thorne’s organizational budget and financial reporting is timely, accurate, clear, concise, and well understood by Trustees, Staff, and key funders and partners
  • Thorne’s annual operations plan is ambitious and motivating for Thorne’s staff which are provided with the resources and support required to achieve the plan
  • Maintain a positive cash flow, three-month operating reserve, and the corpus of endowments while simultaneously allowing for growth in impact of Thorne’s mission
  • Ensures human resources and administrative operations are efficient and effective
  • Exceptional management of staff and contractors involved with finance and HR

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 5 years work experience in accounting, or
  • Business/nonprofit administration or Master’s Degree in accounting, or
  • Business/nonprofit administration and minimum of 3 years work experience.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and roles, patiently and professionally
  • Strong supervisory and management/mentorship skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Effective at working with people of diverse backgrounds and levels of experience

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting best practices
  • Proficient in QuickBooks
  • Spanish language skills

Compensation

  • This full time, exempt position provides a salary that is negotiable, dependent on qualifications: using the Colorado Nonprofit Salary Survey for Compensation.
