Position Overview

The person assigned to the Assistant Plant Manager position should display knowledge and capabilities related to engineering design, project management, and has a thorough familiarity with the operations and maintenance functions of the Plants.  Knowledge of company and government regulations including environmental and industrial procedures is needed for required filings. This person will possess leadership skills and knowledge to assist the Plant Manager with the supervision of the operation and maintenance personnel/activities to ensure continuity of the Steam Plant, Cooling Plant and Steam Distribution System.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management of the Steam and Cooling facility that the equipment receives proper preventative maintenance to minimize failures. 
  • Inspect and approve completed work involving operating equipment to ensure that all work was completed properly, and equipment is operating satisfactorily.
  • Develop employee training to meet the needs of their positions and prepare for future advancement.  Update and maintain Operating Procedures and Plant Schematics.
  • Treat water used in steam production, meet Plant environmental limits and oversee fuel oil handling equipment used in Plant Operations.
  • Interact with Plant Manager and Operators to expeditiously repair critical equipment failures, which jeopardize safety and system reliability.  Prepare subsequent equipment failure reports and maintenance records.
  • Inspect all completed mechanical and electrical maintenance, as well as new construction, to be certain work has been done properly before indicating acceptance.
  • Assist to establish schedules for equipment maintenance, assign tasks to operation and maintenance personnel, and work closely with mechanics in preparing plant equipment for annual insurance inspections and overhauls.
  • Interface with other Company personnel relating to operation of steam generators, steam distribution and auxiliary equipment, and arrange for outages.  Outside contacts occur with production equipment consultants and various manufacturing representatives on matters relating to environmental control, boiler standards and other operating problems.
  • Coordinate routing and emergency maintenance of the steam distribution system including scheduling and inspecting the performance of routine maintenance work, locating and repairing steam leaks, correcting equipment failures, ordering repair parts and preparing failure reports. 
  • Perform other duties including attending first aid, safety, and staff meetings, reviewing time tickets, scheduling vacation, preparing work assignment sheets, employee rating reports, and equipment reports showing work done and condition of equipment.
  • Maintain active working relationships with personnel, governmental representatives and other local utilities.  Respond to environmental complaints of steam leaks in the distribution system and obtain street opening and traffic permits by consulting with City Engineers, Traffic Directors and Police Departments when excavations of steam distribution facilities are required.
  • Participate in all Plant “morning meetings”; staff meetings, training programs, etc. and as required by the Plant Manager.  Inclusion in theses meetings is necessary to maintain the intimate familiarity with Plant issues, problems, employees and projects.
  • Plan, organize, control, schedule, and direct the efforts of Operating Personnel in the proper operation of equipment including instrument, combustion controls, boiler feed water treatment, gas system, oil system, steam generators, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Participate in Plant design and equipment improvements.
  • Interface with Plant Personnel relating to operation of steam generators, steam distribution and auxiliary equipment, and arrange for outages.  Outside contacts occur with production equipment consultants and various manufacturing representatives on matters relating to environmental control, boiler standards, and other operating problems.
  • Ensure operating shifts are properly covered.
  • Provide technical and marketing support for the development of steam and chilled water service proposals and contracts.
  • Document Safety Discrepancies and Near Hits.
  • Possible travel to project sites, manufacturing locations, consultant locations, as needed.
  • Develop employee training to meet the needs of their positions and prepare for future advancement.  Update and maintain Operating Procedures and Plant Schematics.
  • Promote a motivated and competent work force by effectively administering established policies and programs including those pertaining to safety, affirmative action, counseling, productivity, training, goal setting and work planning.
  • Ensure systems are properly tagged and system prints are updated with changes. 
  • Oversee Plant personnel matters.  Receive, interpret, and implement Personnel practices prescribed by Management.  Train, counsel, and promote development of subordinates to meet the needs of these positions and prepare employees for future advancement.  Conduct Staff Meetings for discussion and exchange of information. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills:

  • High diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology preferred.
  • 1 year minimum energy experience.  
  • 3-5 years minimum of plant supervisor experience.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Knowledge of Operations, specific equipment and current familiarity or the capability to obtain a thorough familiarity, with the company’s multi-faceted operations and maintenance functions.
  • Must demonstrate capability to communicate well with others, including Plant personnel, potential or existing company customers, regulatory authorities, contractors, etc.
  • Basic understanding of electrical and or mechanical engineering theory with the additional capability to supplement the Engineering Technicians ability with outside consulting services.

Compensation: $85,000/year + annual incentive plan.
